With its big skies and large open spaces, Lincolnshire is the perfect flying county. With a large population of air bases, both active and historic, Lincolnshire offers the aviation enthusiast a rich feast of visitor centres and sites of interest to explore. Below are some of the highlights to experience during your stay in ‘Bomber County’, as Lincolnshire became known in WWII.

Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitor Centre

The centre is located on an operational RAF airfield at RAF Coningsby; it operates the only airworthy Lancaster in Britain, and in addition there are five Spitfires, two Hurricanes, a Dakota and two Chipmunks.

Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre

Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre

Built in 1940 and formerly part of RAF Woodhall Spa. The site included Officers mess, Airmans\' Dining Halls, a NAAFI and Ration Store. The visitor centre depicts the story of RAF Woodhall Spa and its Squadrons, together with Civilian Life in Lincolnshire during WWII. Open every Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays from May to September, and Wednesdays in July and August.

Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, East Kirkby

This heritage centre is home to the Lancaster \'Just Jane\' one of only four Lancasters remaining in the UK, and this is one of only three in the world that can move under its own power (taxi rides available in the Summer). Further exhibits at the centre include aircraft Hangars, original Barnes Wallis Bouncing Bomb, military vehiciles, a NAAFI, a Station Chapel, a Control Tower and an Escape Museum. Closed on Sundays.

Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre

Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre

A small museum dedicated to RAF 106 Bomber Squadron. It contains information, displays and artefacts that relate to flyers, aircrew and ground staff. It was one of only four airfields in Lincolnshire equipped with FIDO (Fog Intensive Dispersal Of) which allowed aircraft to land safely in fog. Open Easter to October on Wednesdays 1200 to 1600, and Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays 1200 to 1700.

Newark Air Museum

Located on a former airfield Newark Air Museum has four undercover display areas showing 69 aircraft and cockpits together with an extensive range of artefacts and aviation memorabilia, including missiles and avionic systems, aerial photography and The Lancaster corner. Open all year except Christmas.
