6 Tips for Choosing an Accessible Holiday Cottage
Any enjoyable accessible holiday starts with sensible planning. By gathering plenty of information before you book your break you can make an informed choice about the best accommodation and facilities to suit your specific needs, and that of your party.
If you have special access requirements you’ll be all too aware of cottages that advertise the provision of accessible facilities but only have perhaps a degree of level access and a disabled WC. If you’re booking an accessible break for a friend or family member with limited mobility or an impairment it is absolutely essential to check facilities thoroughly before you book to ensure you all have an enjoyable and relaxed break.
As owners of eight award-winning accessible holiday cottages we’ve assembled 6 helpful tips on what to check for before you book your accessible break.
1. Check the Access Statement
The provision of an Access Statement for guests is an official requirement for any quality-assured accommodation. The Access Statement helps to describe each aspect of the accommodation, including public areas, walkways and exterior spaces. By checking through the Access Statement you can reassure yourself or your party members of the accommodation layout. If there are aspects of the property that may present a challenge, i.e. a small step or narrow doorway you’ll feel confidently informed ahead of your holiday. Most cottage owners will provide their Access Statement on their website – if not, ask for a copy via email.
2. Use the Website for Accessibility Information
In addition to the Access Statement many accommodation providers also include helpful information on their website about accessible facilities within their accommodation. Have a good look for details details of bedroom sizes and door widths. These are often accompanied by, or detailed within, a set of Floor Plans which can be downloaded and printed for reference. The website may also have useful information and images of wet room facilities which can be very informative for planning a relaxing holiday.
3. Is there Disabled Parking?
More than just the provision of a space marked with a disabled sign, ensure your holiday cottage parking facilities provide a firm, level surface on which to park and unload. Of course, being close to the main entrance is essential so you may want to check ahead of your arrival to see if a suitable space or unloading point can be recommended for you. A gravel car park or car parking space on a gradient can make it difficult for wheelchairs to navigate or for those walking with aids.
4. Check the Provision of Accessibility Equipment
As well as scoping out the measurements of rooms and checking for essential facilities, you may also require specialist equipment – some of which can be difficult to transport from home to your holiday destination. Finding a holiday cottage with the use of accessibility equipment such as a hoist, shower wheelchair or bed rail can make a huge difference to your holiday experience and give you peace of mind upon arrival – not to mention saving space in the car and the need to hire items whilst away.
5. Find Local Accessible Attractions
Many holiday cottages provide a list of accessible attractions, places to visit and local restaurants and shops. This helps you plan out your holiday and saves you having to do the research yourself. The list may be available on the cottage owner’s website or provided to you upon arrival.
6. Look for the Sign of Assurance
Does your cottage have an accessibility grading by Visit Britain? Look for the yellow and black wheelchair logo which will reassure you that the cottage has been assessed under the National Accessibility scheme.
